Singapurrra: Pesky People Pleaser By Yvonne Tse Singapura is a breed of cat adopted by the Singapore Tourism Board in 1990. The name means Singapore in Malay (literally Lion City). Whether its origins are actually from Singapore remains dubious for some. I interviewed Felix Yeo, a hobby breeder of Singapuras, and Bien Chao, an owner of two, to find out more. Bien Chao’s Singapura, acquired from Felix’s cattery. Granted pedigree status by the U.S. Cat Fanciers Association in 1988, the local breed has a controversial history. Breed Origin & Controversy The story started with Hal and Tommy Meadow who, in 1975, returned to the U.S. from Singapore with three drain cats and began breeding them. It has been argued that the Singapura was a man-made breed created from Abyssinian and Burmese cats, as there is evidence that the Meadows had brought these breeds with them when they originally moved to Singapore. Since the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) in the U.S. gave the Singapura...

September 2009 SAN Article

Singapore is chock-full of expats from around the globe SAN talks to a few If you are reading this, chances are good that you are an expatriate or expat. In the broadest sense, an expatriate is any person living in a different country from where they were born. Years ago, the term was often used to refer to professionals sent abroad by their companies, as opposed to locally hired staff (who can also be foreigners). But this distinction is lost today as many expats run their own businesses or are on local packages. The differentiation found in common usage usually comes down to socio-economic factors, so skilled professionals working in another country are described as expatriates, whereas a manual laborer who has moved country to earn more money might be labeled a migrant worker or, in the case of a maid, a domestic worker. There is no set definition and meaning varies depending on context and individual preferences and prejudices. In developed countries, expatriates and...

What’s in a Title? By Heidi Bakker Kingman Upon moving to Singapore, I quickly weeded through the new titles and terms that were being applied to me and those like me. I immediately eliminated dependent the moment I was presented with this dreaded option on a customs form. (I checked the box for something else… anything else!) Outside of a tax deduction indicator for the IRS, I find little redeeming value in using that word to describe anyone other than a child. My name as an acronym: Highly Educated Independent Degree carrying Individual. I am a Heidi in every sense of the word so dependent is definitely out. And who did not inform Singapore that Housewife is sooooo 50’s? And who did not inform Singapore that Housewife is sooooo 50’s? I mean really, half of us don’t even live in houses! So imagine, the number of options needed for accuracy: condo-wife, apartment-wife, flat-wife (!), or my personal favorite, the semi-detached-wife. You can ask my husband his preference, but...

Behavioral Interviewing

Behavioral Interviewing
By Alka Chandiramani

Did you know that approximately 30% of companies use an interviewing technique called “Behavioral Interviewing?” For those of us on the other side of the interview desk, this is a technique used to evaluate a candidate’s past experiences and actions. By doing so, the interviewer can determine the candidate’s potential for success based on actual past behaviors and history, instead of hypothetical questions. The interviewer identifies the desired skills and characteristics needed for a particular job and then structures open-ended questions to elicit detailed responses from the candidate. For example, if assertiveness is an important requirement for the job, the interviewer might ask “Tell me about a time you had to sell your idea to your manager or customer.” Or, if interpersonal skills are critical for the position, the interviewer could ask “Tell me about a situation in the past year in which you had to deal with a very upset customer or co-worker. What did you do to resolve it?”

The best way to respond to these types of questions is to use real-life examples, not offer your opinions or theoretical statements. The interviewer wants to hear how you have handled and dealt with actual situations, not what you think you would do. Be sure your answer covers the following three elements: 1) the situation or task, 2) the action you took to resolve/handle it, and 3) the results of your actions and decisions.
