About the Event
The Season of Giving is upon us and the American Association of Singapore (AAS) and The American Club are getting together to collect toys to support the US Marines Toys for Tots program, benefitting needy children in Singapore.
AAS is excited to once again spearhead our local, annual Toys for Tots celebration event, a tradition cherished by many members of our community. Children and adults will have loads of fun while donating a bounty of toys for underprivileged children. This year, our chosen charity is Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), who is partnering with the National University Hospital and Institute of Mental Health to support families during their child’s hospitalisation.
This is a wonderful way to teach your family the joy of giving during this festive season. Not only will you be contributing towards a worthy cause, you and your own kids will also get to enjoy:
- delicious buffet
- holiday crafts
- cookie decorating
- choir performances by the SAS Singers
- photos with Santa
- a leaving gift for each child provided by Little Farms
- ... and so much more!
BERNINA Singapore is also providing a fancy embroidery machine worth $888 as a Lucky Draw for some lucky family! Volunteers from the Embassy and SmileFocus as well as staff from the US Embassy will also be on hand to run some of the great craft tables. Yay!
This event is open to all so you don't have to be a member of American Association of Singapore nor The American Club to join in the fun!
WHAT TO BRING
Bring a NEW, UNWRAPPED toy to donate. Some suggested toys include big building blocks, craft and activities kits, soft toys, learning toys, games and puzzles, school bag, pencil case, stationery, etc suitable for children of both genders. The toys will be donated to children aged 0 to 18 years through Ronald McDonald House Charities (Singapore).
Please note that toys must be NEW! No used toys will be accepted.
ABOUT TOYS FOR TOTS
Toys for Tots began in 1947 as the brain child of Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks. Actually, it was his wife, Diane, who was the real inspiration. She had a few handcrafted dolls and asked Bill to deliver them to an agency that supports children in need. When Bill reported back to his wife that he could not find such an organization, she instructed him to “start one!”. Major Hendricks and the Marines in his reserve unit in LA collected and distributed 5,000 toys in 1947. Seeing such successful community engagement in 1947, the Commandant directed all Marine Reserve Sites to implement a Toys for Tots campaign transforming it into a national community action program in 1948. Presently, the Marine Toys for Tots Program distributes an average of 18 million toys to 7 million less fortunate children across the globe annually. We are very proud to contribute to this wonderful effort here in Singapore.
